Fingers tapping nervously on the wheel as I drove, I wondered how many other kids might’ve run afoul of the supernatural on this dark Halloween night, with no one there to save them. Moreover, I considered what had gotten into the two red cap punks. Could Jack’s influence be affecting the unseelie fae of Austin?

Contrary to human folkloric accounts, the difference between seelie and unseelie fae was more cosmetic than behavioral. While the seelie fae were lithe, graceful, and beautiful, they were no less wicked than the squat, twisted, often grotesque members of the unseelie factions. Both were capable of cruelty beyond imagining, the only difference being that the seelie fae were easier to gaze upon.

Most of the seelie court were likely ensconced within their queen’s manse, a sprawling, endless network of constantly shifting rooms and halls. Meaning, they were protected from the effects of any hostile external magic. Not by nature of Maeve’s wards, but by the fact that her home’s Tardis-like interior lay elsewhere, beyond the human plane of existence.

The unseelie fae enjoyed no such protections and thus remained exposed to any ill effects Jack might exert on denizens of The World Beneath. Though the young red caps’ aggression could be explained by simple psychological influence—an emboldening caused by the darkness spreading over Austin—I suspected there was more to it than that.

Gripped by sudden concern, I grabbed my phone and hit the second number on my speed dial—Maureen’s. When she picked up, I heard the cry of seagulls in the background and the gentle lapping of waves on sand.

“Speak, boyo,” she said in her rich Irish lilt.

“Enjoying your vacation?”

“Aye, but ya’ didn’t call ta’ chat about that. What troubles have ya’ stumbled inta’ this time?”

“Do you know anything about Stingy Jack?”

“Jack-o’-the-Lantern? ‘Course, I do. It’s a story told by fae parents ta’ scare us into obedience, much like the boogeyman humans fear.”

“I don’t understand. Why would the fae be afraid of Jack? It’s not like he’s one of you, not really.”

“There’s a reason why Maeve hired him as her henchman. It goes back to his nature, that of the curse, an’ of what powers it granted. No matter what ya’ believe about the source of said magic, the man was transformed into something else, not quite fae, an’ not quite human. As such, he was given responsibilities an’ powers, beyond that of mortal ken.”

“In other words, authority was delegated to him.”

“That’s right.”

I released a frustrated sigh. “And that authority is most prevalent on Samhain, yes?”

“He’s back, innit’ he?” She hissed, her voice taking on a more urgent tone as she continued. “Listen, lad, if Jack’s returned ta’ even the score, this is not the night ta’ be confrontin’ that wicked bastard. Avoid him if ya’ can, preferably ‘til after Imbolc, when his power’s fully waned.”

“Um, I don’t have the luxury of waiting months to deal with him.” I quickly explained the night’s events and how Jack was hunting our friends and allies, presumably in an effort to force a confrontation between us.
